Sourdough baby pizza cupcakes (baby led weaning) – Who does not like pizzas? This recipe is a fun way to introduce solids to your little one. In addition, sourdough pizzas are healthier and delicious!
Is there anyone here who does not like pizza? I personally have not come across anyone who does not enjoy this famous Italian dish. Not to mention – a sourdough pizza is definitely a treat for your tiny human.
This baby pizza cupcake is easy to make and satisfying for a small tummy. Even though no salt is added, adults can enjoy these flavourful mini pizzas as lunch too! (My husband was surprised, and we love these too!)
My favourite part of a pizza is the ability to be creative. However, a good pizza can be as simple as a pizza margarita. Just have fun with your little one, he/ she will love his/her baby pizza cupcakes! Other than that, sourdough pizzas are also a healthier choice to your regular pizzas because sourdough is easier to digest.
Bonus: Make these mini pizzas with your children, this is a great way to bond!
Just a little disclaimer, I am not a nutritionist or physician. I am just a simple mum of 2 kids. You know your kids the best. If you think that your baby is ready for solids and has no allergies, you can try this recipe. If you are unsure, please consult your doctor. I personally introduce breads to my children, when they were about 8 to 10 months, even though they were ready for solids at an earlier age. My kids have had no problems, and they love these pizza cupcakes, even at this age!
Tips on making sourdough baby pizza cupcakes
Grated Mozzarella cheese: Mozzarella is a common cheese used in pizzas. However, the main reason why I prefer using grated mozzarella cheese in baby pizzas is due to its low sodium content.
Toppings: Pizzas are meant to be creative. I would definitely avoid adding salami or sausages for these baby pizza cupcakes. Feel free to add some healthy ingredients such as zucchini, mushrooms etc.
Crust: My family prefers thin crusts. If you prefer thicker crust, simply increase the amount of the dough.
Cool down: Please allow the bread to cool down for several minutes before trying to remove the baby pizza cupcakes.
Sourdough: For more information, please check out Part I and Part II of my sourdough starter guide.
How to make sourdough baby pizza cupcakes
- For the crust, add all the ingredients into a mixing bowl and mix the ingredients either using hands or an electric mixer (mix at the lowest level) until a non-sticky dough is form. If it is sticky, add in some flour.
- Dust a little flour over the bottom of a small bowl and transfer the pizza dough into the bowl.
- Cover the bowl with a suitable lid to prevent the dough from drying. Thereafter, keep the bowl in a warm place (about 21 °C – 23 °C).
- After 2 – 8 hours, check if the bread dough has risen (it does not have to be double in size). Once it has risen, stretch and fold all sides of the dough with your hands. If the dough gets too sticky, spread very little all-purpose flour to ease the folding.
- After which, cover the baby pizza cupcake dough again and repeat step 3. Once the sourdough bread rises for the second time after about 2 – 8 hours, repeat step 4 and 3 once more.
- Preheat baking oven to 250 °C.
- When the dough rests for the third time after 2 – 6 hours, spread a little flour onto your working space and transfer your sourdough bread from the bowl to your working top using a dough scraper.
- Roll the pizza dough with a rolling pin until desired thickness. My family prefers thin pizzas.
- Use a cup (diameter about 8 cm) to cut circles out of the dough. Dust a little flour over the cupcake baking tray and transfer the dough into each cupcake mould.
- Spread some tomato sauce onto the dough and add some cheese over the sauce. Leave the toppings as it is or add more toppings such as mushrooms, zucchini.
- Reduce the heat of the baking oven to 200 °C. Bake the baby pizza cupcakes for 8 to 10 minutes.
- After baking, place the cupcake tray on a cooling tray and allow it to cool down for a few minutes. Thereafter, remove each baby pizza from the cupcake mould and enjoy!
