Whenever I ran out of cooking ideas, I usually opt for this meal because of its simplicity. Additionally, I only have a few dishes to wash after that, which is definitely a bonus for me. This meal saves you precious time. I enjoy cooking and it is a joy to nourish my family. However, I do not necessary want to spend hours every day in the kitchen, since I have other commiments as well such as kids and I believe that you are busy too!
I have tried many brands of tomato sauce and some tomato sauce recipes. I did find some good ones. However, we never found something which we really like. So I decided to experiment with this Tomato Basil Cream Sauce recipe and it turned out to be a hit. My family loves it.
Tips for making Tomato Basil Cream Sauce
Butter: As most of you should know by now, from my older posts (for example this butter cookie recipe and this organic cookie recipe) that I use a good amount of butter in my kitchen. You can also use other oils for this recipe, it is just my personal preference because a good butter just bring the best out of this Tomato Basil Cream Sauce recipe.
Onion: Onion is an important ingredient in this recipe because it adds a sweet flavour to this simple sauce. However, if you do not enjoy onion, you can also skip this step.
Tomato Basil sauce: I prefer using tomato basil sauce to tomato puree for this recipe. This is because tomato basil sauce has a different yet a stronger flavour than plain tomato puree. In addition, I need less basil leaves for the sauce, which is an advantage during colder seasons, since I do not get much fresh basil leaves from my Basil plant. However, the end product does not taste the same. It is so much better!
Heavy cream: Cream and butter can be found in some of my recipes because they just enhance the taste of the dishes. Cream makes the sauce obviously creamy. It also adds a luxurious touch to the Tomato Basil Sauce.
How to make Tomato Basil Cream Sauce
Start off simply by melting butter in a pot and sautee onion cubes in the butter to bring out its sweetness. At the same time, cook pasta according to packaging. You can use any pasta of your choice.
Once the onion cubes turn translucent, add canned tomato puree or tomato basil sauce into the pot. Thereafter, add a bunch of chopped fresh basil leaves. You can feel free to add more basil leaves for more flavors. Season the sauce with salt and pepper according to taste.

Shortly, before turning off the heat, pour heavy cream into the pot to finish the sauce. Add cooked pasta into the sauce and add pasta water as needed. In our case, we prefer having pasta and sauce seperately because each of us can decide how much they take. Just pour some sauce and spread some Parmesan cheese over pasta before serving.
