No sugar homemade jam for kids (Kinder Marmelade ohne Zucker)  – This healthy homemade jam with berries only requires you 4 simple ingredients, which are easily available. No refined sugar added! This recipe is extremely simple and quick to recreate at home. Not only that, this homemade fruit jam is not restricted to babies and kids, it can be enjoyed by adults as well!

Traditionally, homemade jam is made with sugar. However, this need not be the case. Fruit jam can also be made without sugar. This is especially important if someone cannot take in high sugar content due to health reasons or is on diet. Not only that, babies and toddlers should also avoid high sugar diet. I think that sugar for kids is fine. However, they should be in moderation. Therefore, I created this homemade jam recipe for my kids.

This homemade jam with berries only requires you 4 ingredients. All natural ingredients with no additional sugar added. This fruit jam is suitable for babies who are ready for solids and toddlers. Additionally, this recipe can be enjoyed by adults as well, who simply want or need a healthier version of fruit jam.

As long as you have enough ingredients, you can easily and quickly recreate this jam with berries. The usage of frozen fruits allows you to enjoy this recipe even during colder season, when fresh berries are not available. This way, you will almost never run out of delicious fruit jam for breakfast!

Tips on making homemade jam

HOMEMADE JAM

Frozen berries: During the cold season, when fresh berries are not easily available, you can make jam with frozen fruits. Frozen berries are healthy and packed with vitamin C. Organic frozen berries are also readily available and are perfect for this homemade jam recipe for kids.

Dried Dates: (Organic) dried dates are excellent natural sweeteners and an amazing substitute for refined sugar. Dates contain many health benefits as well. Feel free to add more dates according to taste. However, you can use other natural sweeteners such as honey, agave syrup as well.

Water: Water can also be replaced with fruit juice. For example, apple juice is a good substitute and adds sweetness to the jam.

Agar-Agar Powder: Preserving sugar (Gelierzucker) or jam sugar are commonly used to thicken fruit jams. However, these jams are high in sugar content and are not suitable for kids under 12 months. Agar-agar powder is a healthy substitute for preserving sugar as a thickening agent.

HOMEMADE JAM

Melt the frozen berries in a suitable pot over medium heat until the berries thawed completely. Let the fruits cool down a little. To ease the blending process, cut the dried dates into tiny chunks. Dried dates act as natural sweeteners in this case.

Transfer fruits, dates and water into a blender. Mix the ingredients until it is smooth and without chunks. Due to the small amount of homemade jam, I would not recommend using a hand blender to blend the ingredients. This is because the ingredients will not mix well enough.

After which, pour the mixture back into the pot and bring to boil. Thereafter, add in the agar-agar powder. Pour boiling water into a suitable jar and put the lid on. Thereafter, turn the jar over to sterilize the jar for about 5 minutes. Be careful because the jar is very hot, so make sure you wear a pair of oven gloves to protect yourself. Pour the water away.

How to serve Homemade Jam

Serve the sugar-free homemade fruit jam with your favourite bread or bread rolls. This homemade jam can be enjoyed by kids and adults. If your baby is ready for solids, you can let him try this jam as well. My baby started solids at the age of 7 months, and he prefers eating dry food to baby purée.

I introduced this jam with berries at the age of 10 months. He loves his homemade jam with berries on top of his homemade bread for breakfast and cannot have enough of it. However, please consult your doctor beforehand or just observe the development of your baby, if he or she is ready for it.

How to store Homemade Jam for Kids

In a sterilized storage jar, you can keep the fruit jam in the refrigerator for about 2 weeks. I have never tried freezing this recipe because I prefer making it fresh.

As long as you have enough ingredients, this healthy sugarless fruit jam recipe can be easily and quickly recreated in your very own kitchen. It usually takes me less than 30 minutes to put everything together, and my kids (a baby and a toddler) love this homemade jam!
