Tips on making homemade jam
Frozen berries: During the cold season, when fresh berries are not easily available, you can make jam with frozen fruits. Frozen berries are healthy and packed with vitamin C. Organic frozen berries are also readily available and are perfect for this homemade jam recipe for kids.
Dried Dates: (Organic) dried dates are excellent natural sweeteners and an amazing substitute for refined sugar. Dates contain many health benefits as well. Feel free to add more dates according to taste. However, you can use other natural sweeteners such as honey, agave syrup as well.
Water: Water can also be replaced with fruit juice. For example, apple juice is a good substitute and adds sweetness to the jam.
Agar-Agar Powder: Preserving sugar (Gelierzucker) or jam sugar are commonly used to thicken fruit jams. However, these jams are high in sugar content and are not suitable for kids under 12 months. Agar-agar powder is a healthy substitute for preserving sugar as a thickening agent.
How to make Homemade Jam with no sugar
Melt the frozen berries in a suitable pot over medium heat until the berries thawed completely. Let the fruits cool down a little. To ease the blending process, cut the dried dates into tiny chunks. Dried dates act as natural sweeteners in this case.
Transfer fruits, dates and water into a blender. Mix the ingredients until it is smooth and without chunks. Due to the small amount of homemade jam, I would not recommend using a hand blender to blend the ingredients. This is because the ingredients will not mix well enough.
After which, pour the mixture back into the pot and bring to boil. Thereafter, add in the agar-agar powder. Pour boiling water into a suitable jar and put the lid on. Thereafter, turn the jar over to sterilize the jar for about 5 minutes. Be careful because the jar is very hot, so make sure you wear a pair of oven gloves to protect yourself. Pour the water away.
Transfer the homemade jam into the storage jar, cover the lid and let the jam cool down completely.
